Lessons from Leon
No shortcuts in business.
Brian’s education in business began at age 12, working in his grandfather Leon’s dry-cleaning business. Outside of work, Leon treated him differently. They would go out to dinner, and Leon could be pleasant and easy to be around. But inside the dry cleaners, he was a different person. He was the boss—and he expected Brian to work harder than anyone else.
Leon was tough, direct and demanding. Brian received no special treatment because he was family. If anything, Leon held him to a higher standard than the other employees. He repeatedly taught Brian that there were no shortcuts in business. The work had to be done correctly, standards could not slip when things became difficult, and excuses did not change the outcome.
Leon also gave Brian an unfiltered education in people and the realities of the world. He believed that business owners needed clear boundaries, sound judgment and the strength to make difficult decisions. One lesson stayed with Brian in particular: “You can’t beat somebody at their own game.” To succeed, you have to understand your own strengths, establish your own position and compete on your own terms.
Some of Leon’s lessons felt severe to a 12-year-old. Looking back, Brian has tremendous respect for what his grandfather taught him. The dry cleaners became his first classroom in business, and Leon’s lessons continue to shape how he works today: work harder than expected, never take shortcuts, remain clear-eyed about people and circumstances, and take responsibility for the outcome.
Eric’s Insights
Be present for what matters.
Brian’s father, Eric, is one of the hardest-working men he knows. He has always done whatever was necessary to provide for his family and take care of the people who depended on him. But unlike Leon, whose life centered heavily around work, Eric understood that business and money were never the only measures of success. The two men sometimes clashed over that difference in priorities, but watching their relationship gave Brian the opportunity to learn something valuable from both.
Eric taught Brian that family must always come first. He showed him the importance of being present—not just physically, but emotionally—and of showing up for the events and moments that matter. Businesses can be rebuilt, opportunities will come and go, and money can always be earned again. Time with family is different. Once a moment has passed, it cannot be replaced. That lesson has influenced the way Brian tries to live as a husband, a father and a businessman.
To this day, Eric remains one of the first people Brian turns to when he has an important business decision to make. Brian leans on him for advice, asks him questions and values his perspective because he is a vast wealth of knowledge and experience. Eric has a way of looking beyond the immediate problem, cutting through the noise and helping Brian see what really matters. Somehow, he always seems to have the right answer—or at least the right question that helps Brian arrive at the answer himself.
Leon taught Brian that there are no shortcuts in business and that success requires discipline, toughness and hard work. Eric taught him how to balance that ambition with the responsibility of being present for the people he loves. Together, those lessons have shaped the person Brian is today: work hard, make thoughtful decisions and take care of your responsibilities—but never allow success in business to come at the expense of your family.
